Association of Southeast Asian
Nations
Older,
more developed, six members are Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei. Latest four members are Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
ASEAN
was founded Aug. 8, 1967 in Bangkok with all the "original six"
except Brunei, which joined Jan. 8, 1984. Vietnam joined July, 28, 1995, Laos
and Myanmar July 23, 1997, and Cambodia April 30, 1999.
The
group also meets in the ASEAN plus 3 formula, which
brings in Japan, China and South Korea as partners.
It
also has "dialogue partners'' from major developed countries such as the
U.S., Canada, Australia, New
Zealand and so on. The list: Australia, Canada, China,
European Union, India, Japan, South
Korea, New Zealand, Russia, U.S., and the UN Development Program. ASEAN
also promotes cooperation with Pakistan in certain
sectors, but India works hard to keep Pakistan out of the "official"
dialogue structure.
In 1992, the ASEAN heads of state and government declared
ASEAN should ''intensify its external dialogues'' in political and security
matters as a means of building cooperative ties with states in the Asia-Pacific
region.
Two years later, the ASEAN
Regional Forum, ARF, was established. ARF aims to promote confidence-building, preventive
diplomacy and conflict resolution in the region.
The current participants in ARF are: Australia, Brunei,
Cambodia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Indonesia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea,
Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Pakistan, Philippines,
Russia, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
South Asia Association
for Regional Cooperation
SAARC
members are: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Bhutan.
SAARC
was formed Dec. 8, 1985, primarily to enhance economic cooperation in South
Asia. It has been in regular turmoil, often because India and Pakistan often
fail to see eye to eye on many issues and partly because the smaller economies
fear being overwhelmed by India.
Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation (forum)
APEC has 21 members - referred to as "Member
Economies" - which account for more than 2.5 billion people, a combined
GDP of $19 trillion and 47% of world trade. It also represents the most
economically dynamic region in the world having generated nearly 70% of global
economic growth in its first 10 years.
APEC's
Member Economies are Australia; Brunei; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong, China, Indonesia; Japan; South Korea;
Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; Philippines; Russia;
Singapore; Taiwan (called Chinese Taipei by these
types in official documents as a sop to China); Thailand; U.S. and Vietnam.
Unless noted below, see the Europa World
Year Book for governments of Asian countries and see the geographical
dictionary for place names. On the Web check

Problems
can and will crop up in spellings of names and places because many of these
countries do not use standard transliterations.
Arabic,
Sanskrit, Cyrillic, Chinese, Hangul and other alphabets are used extensively in
Asia and transliterations often must be decided arbitrarily.
Official
Websites can offer some help, but often the same government site will use
different spellings, even for the names of the prime minister or president.
Ministers' names are even more likely to have multiple spellings.
Asia References will try to keep up to date with current accepted spellings for ministers and
other things that come up regularly.

Korea, which continues. The UNC (United Nations Command) administers the DMZ
along with "East Bloc" countries such as China on the northern side
(also see Panmunjeom entry).

rejecting Indonesian rule in a UN-sponsored referendum
in August 1999 that was followed by bloody rioting until Australia, and then
the UN, dispatched troops to end the bloodletting. It spent nearly 3 years
